Photographing Children

Children… They are in an entirely different world, entirely different mind set. Life is pretty much constantly a lot of fun and easy for them. Finding the right level of communication with them can be challenging… It takes tremendous imagination, creativity and tact on a normal day to make them interested in us as strangers, just imagine how hard we need to try if with a huge black camera in front of our face…

It’s actually not that hard if we just let them guide us initially and learn how to read them. The range of things that can trigger their interest is huge… A stick, pine cones, birds, stories of your own dogs, a piece of feather, you name it. As a photographer though, we need to be able to do the entertaining while ready with our cameras at any given moment.

All these years, I’ve loved interacting with children, learning about their fascinating personalities. I also love to capture the way they are. It can be challenging at times, but I believe that if we mostly let them do what they want to and snap away while they are busy with their things, we will succeed. A photo session like this can take a long time… an hour, or more before we can get the perfect moment or expression.

Even though I don’t have children, I’ve had great experience with them since I was eighteen. First it was my niece and nephew next door and then kindergarten, elementary school and even an orphanage in Hungary. Then I was an Au-Pair with three kids in New York for a year and a half. Now it’s all my friends’ little ones I enjoy being with any opportunity I get.
